How do you carry out non-toxic disinfestation when storing grain? Please explain the methods.
When storing grain, the high-temperature disinfestation method can be used. Generally, stored-grain pests can tolerate high temperatures of 35-40°C; under conditions of 46-48°C, sustained over a longer period, the pests can be killed, while above 50°C, the vast majority of pests will die within a short time. High-temperature disinfestation generally requires a temperature above 46°C. The following methods are commonly used for high-temperature disinfestation.
1. Sun-drying method. In the hot season, take the grain out to dry in the heat, spread it in a thin layer and turn it frequently. Generally, after drying for 4-6 hours, when the grain temperature reaches above 46°C and is maintained for 2 hours, the killing effect can be ensured. However, the moisture content at storage should be controlled below 12%.
2. Mechanical heating disinfestation. Using heating and drying machinery such as sulfide-tank dryers, drum dryers and tower dryers, heat the grain for 33-60 minutes to bring the grain temperature to 50-55°C, then discharge it from the machine, temper it for 1-2 hours, and then ventilate and cool it; this can kill all larvae and adult insects. If tempered for 4-6 hours, the eggs can also be killed.
3. Killing weevils in broad beans and peas with boiling water. First place the grain in a bamboo basket, immerse the basket together with the grain in boiling water, and stir the beans constantly. After 28-30 seconds, immediately lift out the basket, cool it briefly in cold water, then spread it out to dry until the moisture content drops below 12% before storing.
