How is ethephon used on cotton in the late stage? Here is an introduction.
Using ethephon in the late stage of cotton growth has become a yield-increasing technique very popular among cotton farmers. Ethephon is a ripening agent; after use, it generally allows cotton bolls to open 7-10 days earlier, increases the amount of cotton picked before frost by 20-30%, and can improve the luster and fiber quality of the cotton, increasing the economic income of cotton farmers.
So, in the late stage of cotton growth, how should ethephon be used to achieve good results?
1. Master the timing of use. When spraying ethephon on cotton, both the development of the cotton bolls and the local temperature changes at the time must be considered. If the spray is applied too early, the relatively high temperature will cause the leaves to age and drop prematurely, and the cotton bolls to dry up, resulting in reduced yield, so the ripening effect will not be achieved. The most suitable time to spray is about 20 days before the local killing frost period, when the maximum temperature reaches above 20°C; spraying in time gives the best effect. This is generally from late September to early October.
2. The dosage of the agent must be appropriate. Within the suitable spraying period, use ethephon with an active ingredient content of 40%, 100-150 grams per mu, add 50-60 kg of clean water, and spray evenly. If the temperature is relatively high when spraying and the cotton plants are growing weakly, the dosage can be appropriately reduced; if the spraying time is late, the temperature is low, and the cotton plants are growing vigorously, the dosage can be appropriately increased.
3. While spraying ethephon, all newly grown tender branches and flower buds on the upper part of the cotton plants, as well as cotton bolls with a growth period of less than 35 days, should be cut off, so as to improve the ventilation conditions of the cotton field, concentrate nutrients, and enable the other cotton bolls to mature early and open early.
