Control Methods for Cilantro Mosaic Virus: Yellow Leaves, Stunted Plants and Eventual Death

When growing cilantro in winter, it is prone to infection by mosaic virus. Yellow mosaic patches appear on cilantro, with the heart leaves being the most severely affected. It also causes severe stunting of cilantro, with no new roots or new leaves growing, the plant becoming smaller and smaller, and finally withering and dying. Cilantro mosaic virus is mainly spread by aphids. Aphid damage is severe in winter, so cilantro is easily infected, and the disease spreads rapidly, causing large areas to become infected. The control measures for cilantro mosaic virus are as follows:

Cilantro Mosaic Virus

First, the seeds must be disinfected. When sowing, soak the cilantro seeds first in an 800-fold dilution of 50% chloroisocyanuric acid aqueous solution for 2-3 hours to kill the virus lurking inside the cilantro seeds. Scoop them out, wash them clean, drain off the water, and then sow. In this way, the seedlings formed after the cilantro seeds germinate are less likely to be infected by mosaic virus.

Second, control aphids in a timely manner. After the cilantro seedlings begin to unfold their leaves, a foliar spray must be applied once every 7-10 days with a 1500-fold dilution of 20% imidacloprid effervescent tablet aqueous solution, or a 1000-fold dilution of 3% acetamiprid suspension concentrate aqueous solution, or a 1500-fold dilution of 5% nitenpyram water dispersible granule aqueous solution, spraying 3-5 times in succession, evenly wetting all leaves, until water droplets begin to drip down. This eliminates the aphids clinging to the cilantro leaves, prevents aphids from spreading the virus, and reduces cilantro viral disease.

Third, the virus activity must be suppressed. During the growth of cilantro, a foliar spray must be applied once every 15-20 days with a mixture of 0.1% zinc sulfate and a 500-fold dilution of 5% ningnanmycin, or a 500-fold dilution of 5% virus vaccine (mushroom polysaccharide) aqueous solution, or a 600-fold dilution of Jundukexing aqueous solution. This can significantly inhibit the virus activity in cilantro and reduce the harm of cilantro mosaic virus.
