How to manage chestnut trees during the fruit expansion period? These technical points must be mastered
In summer and autumn, fertilize in a timely manner, applying fertilizer to the roots once a month, mainly with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers. For trees with a yield of more than 50 kg per tree, apply 0.75-1 kg of urea and 0.5-0.7 kg of monopotassium phosphate each time, or apply 1-1.5 kg of a nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compound fertilizer, broadcast after rain or dissolved in 80-100 kg of clean water and drenched on.
Mulch the tree plate. In summer and autumn, cover the tree plate with dry rice straw or other weeds, with a grass thickness of 8-10 cm, to reduce water loss, keep the soil moist, prevent high-temperature and drought weather from damaging the underground root system, and improve root absorption capacity.
Prevent and control diseases and pests. During the chestnut fruit expansion period, trees are prone to damage from anthracnose, powdery mildew, dieback disease, chestnut fruit moth, chestnut gall wasp, chestnut weevil, and others, causing a large amount of rotten fruit and fruit drop. For this reason, spray the inner and outer canopy once a month with a mixture of 1000x chlorpyrifos and 800x thiophanate-methyl, or a mixture of 1000x dichlorvos and 600x carbendazim.
Foliar topdressing. During the chestnut fruit expansion period, spray the leaves once every 10-15 days with a mixture of 0.1% magnesium sulfate, 0.2% urea, 0.3% monopotassium phosphate, and 1500x Shennongsu chelated fertilizer, or with an 800x water solution of Gaomeishi organic humic acid active liquid fertilizer specially for fruit trees, to improve the nutritional level of the tree, promote rapid fruit expansion, make the flesh plump, and avoid empty burrs.
