Jiangxi's Early Rice Production Situation Is Severe, Agriculture Department Supervises Pest and Disease Control
NANCHANG, June 10 (China News Service) - The Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agriculture announced on the 9th that this year's early rice production situation in Jiangxi is severe and the task of pest and disease control is arduous. In order to achieve this year's production target of more than 40 billion jin in total grain output for Jiangxi, the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agriculture will dispatch supervision teams to various localities to inspect pest and disease prevention and control work.
The Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agriculture held a provincial early rice pest and disease control meeting in Fengcheng City on June 8. Zhang Zhongping, deputy director of the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agriculture, pointed out at the meeting that this year's early rice production situation is extremely severe and the task of pest and disease control is extremely arduous. Zhang Zhongping required agricultural departments to treat pest and disease prevention and control as the central work of agricultural departments in June, from the perspective of maintaining the stable development of grain production and ensuring that Jiangxi's status as a major grain-producing province remains unshaken, and from the perspective of guaranteeing the achievement of the 2010 production target of more than 40 billion jin in total grain output for Jiangxi.
The Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agriculture specifically issued the "Opinions on Promoting Specialized Unified Prevention and Control of Crop Pests and Diseases," which all localities must implement in pest and disease control during the early rice heading stage. For major pests and diseases such as rice planthoppers and ear blast, they must unify the timing, unify the pesticides, unify the techniques, and have professionals uniformly apply pesticides for prevention and control, so as to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and benefits of pest and disease control. Supervision must be strengthened and oversight reinforced to ensure that pest and disease prevention and control during the early rice heading stage achieves real results.
It is understood that pest and disease prevention and control operates under a territorial responsibility system. The Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agriculture will dispatch supervision teams to various parts of the province to inspect pest and disease prevention and control work. Each designated city must also strengthen inspection and supervision of pest and disease control in the counties (cities, districts) under its jurisdiction, and report progress on prevention and control to the Provincial Department of Agriculture once a week.
Based on a comprehensive analysis of factors including this year's early rice variety layout and growth conditions in Jiangxi Province, the earlier incidence of pests and diseases, the incidence of “two migration” pests in neighboring provinces to the south, historical pest and disease incidence data and weather forecasts, the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Agriculture predicts that major pests and diseases during the early rice heading stage will show a trend of above-moderate occurrence. In particular, there is a very high risk of an outbreak and epidemic of ear blast, rice planthoppers will occur heavily in southern rice-growing areas, and rice leaf rollers will occur at above-moderate levels in southern rice-growing areas.
