Liu Qixing said that Yuchi Township is a well-known production area for large-leaf black tea. The township farmers' association has long guided farmers in upgrading technology and expanding marketing, and has held public purchasing since July 2019. This year's purchased tea varieties include Tai Cha No. 18, Assam, Tai Cha No. 21, and Taiwan mountain tea, and Huang Zhengzong, head of the Yuchi Branch of the Tea Research and Extension Station under the Executive Yuan's Council of Agriculture, and others were invited to conduct the tasting. More than 7,000 Taiwan jin will be purchased.
The tasting includes appearance, tea aroma after brewing, and taste. Liu Qixing said that if the tea quality is good, there is no fear that no one will buy it. Through the farmers' association's public purchasing, besides stabilizing black tea prices, it is hoped that tea farmers will join in to stabilize tea quality. The tea farmers who responded also agreed that it can solve marketing difficulties, and at the same time take the opportunity to learn from experts how to improve and raise quality so as to better meet market demand.
Wang Weiwen, secretary-general of the Yuchi Township Farmers' Association, said that in the early period of Japanese rule, the Japanese believed that Yuchi Township's climate and soil were very suitable for growing black tea. In addition to establishing a black tea research institute, they also introduced large-leaf Assam black tea seedlings, then cultivated and improved them with Taiwan mountain tea, giving rise to Tai Cha No. 18 Ruby black tea, which has faint aromas of mint and cinnamon, and is now widely loved by consumers.
