China News Finance, Kunming, April 20 (He Xiaoying) "The global macadamia planting area is 1.13 million mu, of which Yunnan alone accounts for 1.10 million mu. 'Yun-guo' will become another characteristic and advantageous industry with global influence and a voice, following 'Yun-yan' and 'Yun-hua.'" On the 20th, Leng Hua, Deputy Director of the Yunnan Provincial Forestry Department, revealed that Yunnan's macadamia planting area has exceeded 90% of the world's total, making it the world's largest macadamia planting region.
Macadamia is hailed as the "king of nuts," with extremely high nutritional value and health benefits. It was introduced to China for trial planting in the 1960s and 1970s, and found suitable soil and climate conditions in the low-latitude areas of the Yunnan Plateau. Not only did it flower and bear fruit, but its quality surpassed that of its place of origin, and it also became a "money tree" for increasing income and prosperity in Yunnan's border ethnic minority regions.
Currently, global market demand for macadamia exceeds 500,000 tons per year. However, due to the narrow regions worldwide suitable for growing macadamia and limited production, total global nut-in-shell production is about 140,000 tons per year. Calculated at a 30% kernel yield, kernel production is only 45,000 tons. The huge supply-demand gap makes macadamia products expensive on the international market, with prices remaining high for a long time.
"Macadamia is an evergreen tall tree with a long growth cycle, and currently only part of the planted area has reached production." Chen Yuxiu, Chairman of Yunaoda Nut Development Co., Ltd., a leading macadamia enterprise, stated that once all of Yunnan's macadamia enters its peak fruiting period, it will capture a huge market share globally.
Yunaoda Nut Development Co., Ltd., on the basis of introducing superior foreign varieties, advanced technology and talent, has established a full-industry-chain technical support system suitable for Yunnan's natural climate characteristics, covering improved variety breeding, high-yield cultivation, processing, marketing, and technology research, development and extension.
"We selected 6 superior varieties suitable for planting at different altitudes in Yunnan from over 100 varieties, which obtained the 'Forest Tree Improved Variety' certificate, and built a series of macadamia planting bases and research bases." Chen Yuxiu said the company has achieved an annual supply capacity of more than 3 million high-quality seedlings.
As two major suitable planting areas for macadamia, Lincang City and Dehong Prefecture in Yunnan have leveraged their resource advantages in recent years to vigorously develop the macadamia industry. In 2013, Lincang built a macadamia base of 411,700 mu, and stated it would expand the planting area to 500,000 mu by 2016, achieving an annual output of 100,000 tons and an output value of 1.5 billion yuan.
"By the end of 2014, Yunnan Province had more than 10 macadamia product processing and sales enterprises, with main products including nut-in-shell, kernels, and nut oil, and an annual processing output value of 150 million yuan." Leng Hua, Deputy Director of the Yunnan Provincial Forestry Department, revealed that the Yunnan provincial government plans to develop 4 million mu of macadamia planting across the province by 2020. By then, Yunnan Province will also become the world's largest macadamia producing area, dominating the global macadamia market. (End)
