How is the reasonable crop load of pear trees determined?
Under normal management and moderate crop load conditions, the flower quantity of mature pear trees is generally excessive; some trees even have a flower-branch rate of 70-80%, bearing flowers all over the tree. Although abundant flowers are the foundation of a high yield, excessive fruit set will lead to a large amount of fruit drop and small fruit, and fewer flowers the following year, resulting in alternate bearing. Even with sufficient fertilizer and water, excessive fruit set cannot be allowed. Therefore, pear trees must be controlled to carry a moderate crop load. There are many methods for determining a reasonable crop load. Among them are cultivation experience and numerical indicators. For example, according to the planned yield per unit area, divide the load among individual trees, then calculate the number of fruits each tree should retain based on single-fruit weight, and distribute this among the major limbs; retain 1 fruit per several new shoots so that fruits are evenly distributed among branches; retain 1 fruit per a certain number of leaves, and calculate the number of fruits to retain and their reasonable distribution; retain fruits according to their distribution distance in the canopy; retain fruits based on the single-fruit weight and size of the pear, using experience to guide retention - if fruits were small last year, retain fewer this year; if fruits were too sparse and too large last year, retain more this year; year after year, research has also proposed retaining fruits according to trunk cross-sectional area, which is suitable for young bearing trees. The reasonable crop load is affected by many factors such as cultivation conditions and quality requirements. Its indicators for reasonable crop load should be adjusted in a timely manner. For example, with the development of the market economy, the quality requirements for pears have increased, and the price difference between grades has widened; producing more small fruits is not as good as producing fewer large fruits. For Yangxin Yali pears, pear growers previously demanded a yield of 5000 kg per mu, but now demand a yield of 4000 kg of high-quality fruit per mu. This is because producing 4000 kg of high-quality fruit is more profitable than producing 5000 kg.
