A new pineapple variety has arrived from Taiwan, China! Hailed as the "mango pineapple," "Tainung No. 23" is expected to become the rising star of the market

 

The Chiayi Agricultural Experiment Branch of the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute today announced a new pineapple variety, "Tainung No. 23," developed through 24 years of breeding efforts by crossing "Tainung No. 19" as the female parent with "Tainung No. 21" as the male parent. Farmers affectionately call it the "mango pineapple." It has a high sugar-to-acid ratio, yellow flesh with a mango aroma, and a flavor rich in romantic tropical charm with a sweet-and-sour taste. It can not only adapt to rainy climates and withstand storage and transport, but also rarely develops hollow-heart fruit or cracked fruit, making it the rising star of future domestic and export markets.

 

The Taiwan region has high temperatures and humidity in summer, and many pineapple varieties are prone to problems such as cracked fruit and hollow-heart fruit during fruit development, leading to deterioration in fruit quality and losses, and this is becoming increasingly serious with the impact of global climate change.

 

Associate Researcher Guan Qingshan of the Chiayi Agricultural Experiment Station is an important driving force behind "Tainung No. 23." He used hybridization to breed the "Tainung No. 23" pineapple. The rainy environment has less impact on its fruit quality, which can solve the problem of poor fruit quality after rain in the "Tainung No. 17" Golden Diamond pineapple.

Guan Qingshan said that the "Tainung No. 23" pineapple has a mango aroma. In addition to not having a weakening of fruit aroma during summer cultivation, it is moderately sweet and sour with an excellent flavor. The fruit is short and cylindrical, and the rind is orange-yellow when mature, eye-catching and appealing. The flesh is yellow or orange-yellow, dense in texture and fine in fiber. The average fruit weight is about 1.4 kg. It does not have the problems of hollow-heart fruit and diluted fruit flavor that easily occur after rain, and the flesh remains fine and is not prone to a fibrous texture. The average sugar content is 18.2°, the acidity is 0.7%, and the sugar-to-acid ratio is 26.0. It is rich in a strong, distinctive aroma.

 

The "Tainung No. 23" pineapple plant is short, making it convenient to manage and suitable for mechanized labor-saving operations. This variety is easy to produce, and its autumn and winter fruit is of good quality and stores well, which helps increase the diversity of pineapple varieties in domestic and international markets and enhance farmers' income.
