How to Pick Sweetheart Guava and Red-Fleshed Guava? An Analysis of the Flavor Characteristics of Red-Fleshed Guava
As the seasons change, guava in the Yilan region has also begun to enter its peak production period. Guava cultivation and management techniques are relatively simple. Unlike the mainstream varieties commonly found on the market, which are mostly known for their crisp texture, the guavas abundantly produced locally in Yilan instead feature soft, springy flesh as their main selling point.

To promote locally distinctive agricultural products and further improve quality, the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station of the Council of Agriculture (hereinafter referred to as the Hualien DARES) has also actively promoted related management techniques, hoping to thereby advance the development of the local guava industry.
In late July, farmers begin harvesting ripe, high-quality guavas.
To assist local development, the Hualien DARES actively promotes rational fertilization and health management techniques for guava, such as developing integrated control techniques for guava root-knot nematode, using healthy seedlings, soil amendments, actinomycetes, nematode-antagonistic plants, and non-highly toxic insecticides to reduce nematode damage. In addition, the Hualien DARES has cooperated with National Yilan University to establish post-harvest fruit handling procedures, including storage temperature and packaging methods, to extend fruit storage life. At present, research continues on production period regulation techniques for the Zhongshan Yueba guava, labor-saving control techniques for root-knot nematode, and breeding of climacteric guava varieties.
The flesh of Zhongshan Yueba is white and tender with a slight yellow tinge.
The main guava cultivars grown in the Yilan region are "Zhongshan Yueba" and "Yilan Red Flesh Ba," both of which are climacteric varieties. Among them, the main production area of Zhongshan Yueba is in Toucheng Township, with the production period mostly from August to September; the skin is yellow and the flesh white, the texture is soft and tender, and the fruit has a rich aroma when fully ripe, sweet without being cloying. The Toucheng Township Farmers' Association specially named it "Sweetheart Guava," and it is suitable for fresh eating and processing. The main production area of Yilan Red Flesh Ba is located in Yuanshan Township, with August to September also being the peak production period, and because the skin is yellow and the flesh red, it is rich in lycopene; fruit growers mostly call it "Red-Fleshed Guava." It is similar to the rainbow guava commonly known as watermelon guava, but its flesh is softer, springier, and sweeter, making it suitable for eating directly.

It is worth mentioning that the Hualien DARES also provides some selection tips for the public's reference. For example, for Zhongshan Yueba, it is best to choose fruit whose skin has turned evenly golden yellow, whose shape is intact without bruises or compression damage, and which has a rich aroma; for Yilan Red Flesh Ba, the best choice is fruit whose skin has turned evenly yellow with a slight red blush, and which likewise has a beautiful shape without scars. The Hualien DARES also suggests that these two types of guava are relatively less storage-tolerant varieties, so after purchase, they can be kept refrigerated in fruit-protective foam nets and plastic bags, and it is best to eat them as soon as possible. Subsequently, the Hualien DARES further plans in August to hold quality evaluation competitions for "Sweetheart Guava" and "Red-Fleshed Guava" at the farmers' associations of Toucheng Township and Yuanshan Township, and the public is also welcome to attend.
