The Tunchang black pig is a local pig breed native to Tunchang County, Hainan Province, and is also one of the better-known black-haired pig breeds in Hainan. It is generally believed to have been developed by crossing local sows with Berkshire pigs introduced in earlier years, gradually forming a relatively stable population through long-term selective breeding. Thanks to its distinctive flavor and strong adaptability, the Tunchang black pig has built up a solid reputation both on and off the island.

In terms of appearance, the Tunchang black pig has an entirely black coat, a medium-sized body, a well-proportioned build and sturdy limbs. It inherits the advantages of local pigs, such as tolerance of coarse feed and strong stress resistance, and can adapt well to Hainan's hot and humid climate. Compared with some introduced breeds, its growth rate is not outstanding, but its meat is tender and fine-textured with thin skin, moderate fat distribution and a rich aroma, which is what it is most prized for.

In terms of feeding and management, Tunchang black pigs are mostly raised in a combination of pen housing and free-range rearing. Their daily ration is often supplemented with agricultural by-products such as sweet potato vines, rice bran and corn, which both lowers feed costs and helps produce better meat quality. During rearing, attention should be paid to ventilating the pens and preventing heat stress, carrying out regular disease prevention and disinfection, and adjusting the nutritional ratio according to different growth stages, so as to avoid blind fattening that would affect meat quality.

The meat of the Tunchang black pig is an important ingredient in many traditional Hainan dishes. Cooking methods such as poaching and braising both bring out its flavor, and it has long been popular in local markets. In recent years, the Tunchang black pig has gradually moved toward brand-based and large-scale farming, becoming one of the specialty industries that help raise local farmers' incomes, and it is also often protected and developed as a local livestock and poultry resource.
