An Introduction to the Breed Characteristics and Farming Value of the Tuhe Black Pig
The Tuhe Black Pig is a local pig breed in China, mainly distributed along the Tuhe River basin in Shandong, and it takes its name from its place of origin. It belongs to the traditional black-haired pig type and has a long history of rearing; over a long period it was gradually selected and bred under local farmhouse free-range conditions, and it is a livestock and poultry genetic resource with a certain conservation value.
In appearance, the Tuhe Black Pig is mostly black over the whole body, with a sturdy constitution and strong, robust limbs. This breed has strong adaptability, tolerating both cold and heat, and it adapts well to the local climate and rearing conditions. Compared with introduced foreign pig breeds, its ability to tolerate coarse feed and its disease resistance are more prominent, and its daily feed requirements are relatively broad.
In terms of farming methods, the Tuhe Black Pig is suited to ecological free-range or semi-free-range models, using hillsides, woodland and other spaces to let the pigs move about and forage, with appropriate supplementary feeding of corn, bran and green fodder. It should be noted that this breed grows relatively slowly and has a longer rearing cycle, so farmers should arrange their marketing schedule reasonably, while also maintaining good pen hygiene and routine disease prevention to ensure the health of the herd.
The meat quality of the Tuhe Black Pig is its standout highlight: the intramuscular fat is relatively abundant, the meat color is ruddy, the texture is fragrant and chewy, and after stewing it has a rich aroma, so it is often used to produce high-quality traditional pork products. As consumers' recognition of local-breed pork increases, the farming returns and market prospects of the Tuhe Black Pig are gradually improving, and the conservation, development and utilization of its breed resources are also attracting more and more attention.
