An Introduction to the Breed Characteristics and Farming Value of the Shandong Licha Black Pig
The Shandong Licha black pig is a local pig breed native to Shandong Province, with its main production area concentrated around Jiaozhou, Qingdao; it takes its name from Licha Town. It is a fairly representative member of the North China type of local pig breeds, and is one of the black pig genetic resources that Shandong Province focuses on protecting, developing and utilising. For a long time, this breed has drawn the attention of farmers and consumers for its long body, good meat quality and strong adaptability.
In appearance, the Licha black pig has black hair over its whole body, a sturdy constitution and a well-proportioned build. Its most striking feature is its distinctly long body; some individuals have more thoracic and lumbar vertebrae than ordinary pig breeds, which is why people also call it the long black pig. This breed tolerates coarse feed, has fairly strong disease resistance and good mothering ability, and its reproductive performance is good among local pig breeds, making it suitable for rearing on local feed resources such as coarse grains and agricultural by-products.
Compared with introduced lean-type pigs, the Licha black pig grows more slowly and has a longer rearing cycle, but its meat is tender, richly flavoured and relatively rich in intramuscular fat, giving it outstanding flavour in traditional dishes such as braised pork and sausages. In recent years, through the building of conservation farms and brand-based operations, this local breed has gradually opened up sales channels in the premium black pork market.
For farmers who want to raise Licha black pigs, it is advisable to obtain breeding stock from a licensed breeding pig farm and to carry out vaccination and routine management in accordance with local epidemic prevention requirements. Because this breed wins on quality rather than speed, it is better suited to ecological farming, contract sales or branded pork, earning better returns through differentiated quality.
