Key Points of Bullfrog Farming Technology and Detailed Daily Management Methods
The bullfrog is native to North America and gets its name because its call is as loud as the bellow of an ox. It is one of the edible frog species raised on a relatively large scale. Bullfrog farming falls under the category of aquaculture; its meat is tender and delicious, high in protein and low in fat, and there is steady demand for it in the restaurant market.
In terms of farming characteristics, bullfrogs grow quickly, have strong reproductive capacity and good adaptability, and can be raised in ponds or intensively farmed in cement ponds, cages or greenhouses. When choosing a site, make sure there is an ample water source, clean water quality and convenient drainage and irrigation, and also build good anti-escape facilities, because bullfrogs are skilled jumpers and can easily escape if management is poor.
In terms of feeding management, the tadpole stage mainly feeds on plankton and powdered feed. After metamorphosis into young frogs, they can gradually switch to being fed small fish and shrimp or artificial compound feed. In daily management, carry out graded rearing to prevent large frogs from swallowing small ones, keep water temperature and water quality relatively stable, and regularly clean out leftover bait and excrement from the pond to reduce pollution.
Disease prevention and control is a key part of whether farming succeeds or fails. Common diseases include red-leg disease, skin rot disease and gastroenteritis. Adhering to prevention first, focusing on water disinfection, reasonably controlling the feeding amount and promptly isolating sick frogs can significantly reduce the probability of disease outbreaks. In addition, the bullfrog is an invasive alien species, so during farming strict precautions should be taken to prevent escape into natural waters and avoid affecting the local ecology. Before starting farming, it is also recommended to understand the relevant local aquaculture regulations and produce in accordance with the law and rules.
