Introduction to Black Pig Farming Techniques and Management Methods
Black pig farming is a pig-raising method centered on local black-haired pig breeds. Compared with the common white lean-meat pigs, black pigs generally grow more slowly and have a longer feeding cycle, but their meat is firm, with relatively rich intramuscular fat and a strong flavor, and in recent years they have attracted considerable attention in ecological farming and the specialty pork market.
China has relatively rich resources of local black pig breeds, with representative breeds in various regions, such as the Northeast Min pig, the Laiwu black pig, and the Wujin pig. Different breeds differ in body size, cold and heat tolerance, and reproductive performance. When introducing breeding stock, you should choose a suitable breed according to the local climate, feed conditions, and sales positioning, and bring in healthy breeding pigs from regular breeding farms, checking the relevant quarantine certificates.
In terms of feeding and management, black pigs are generally tolerant of coarse feed. The daily ration can use corn, bran, and soybean meal combined with green fodder. When using a free-range or semi-free-range model, appropriately increasing exercise helps improve meat quality and physical condition. The pen should be kept dry and well ventilated, with cold protection in winter and heat protection in summer, cleaned and disinfected regularly, and vaccination and deworming should be done according to local epidemic prevention requirements to reduce the occurrence of respiratory and digestive tract diseases.
It should be noted that the marketing time for black pigs is usually longer than for ordinary white pigs, and feed and management costs increase accordingly. Farmers should plan sales channels in advance to avoid blindly expanding the herd. Persisting in standardized feeding and focusing on meat quality is the key to stable profits in black pig farming.
