Pigeon raising is a traditional poultry-farming activity carried out for meat, racing, or ornamental purposes. Pigeons are highly adaptable and gentle in temperament, and their site requirements are not particularly demanding, so they are suitable both for small-scale keeping in a courtyard and for large-scale raising in sheds, making them one of the more common farming projects in both urban and rural areas.

Divided by purpose, raised pigeons can be broadly grouped into three types: meat pigeons, homing pigeons, and ornamental pigeons. Meat pigeons grow quickly and have strong reproductive capacity, and their squabs are mostly supplied to the food market; homing pigeons are good at flying long distances back to their lofts and are often used in racing activities; ornamental pigeons have ornamental value because of their diverse feather colors and body shapes. Beginners can choose a suitable breed according to their own goals and local market demand.

In daily feeding, the pigeon loft should be located in a spot with higher ground, good ventilation, and ample light, and the environment should be kept dry and clean. The feed is mainly grains such as corn, peas, wheat, and sorghum, paired with health grit to help digestion and supplement minerals. Drinking water needs to be clean and fresh and should be changed every day, and feed troughs and water troughs should also be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Common problems in pigeons are mostly related to environmental hygiene, such as respiratory diseases, trichomoniasis infection, and intestinal parasites. Persisting with regular disinfection, timely removal of droppings, and carrying out vaccinations and isolation observation on schedule can significantly reduce the risk of disease. Overall, the threshold for pigeon raising is moderate, and as long as management is done well, it is a farming direction quite suitable for family operation.
