Oats are an annual herbaceous cereal crop of the genus Avena in the grass family. Both the grain is harvested and the stems and leaves can be used as forage, and they are widely cultivated around the world. According to whether the grain has a hull or not, oats are usually divided into two major categories: husked oats and naked oats, among which naked oats are commonly known as youmai in northern China and are the main raw material for traditional foods such as youmian.

The most prominent characteristic of oats is their tolerance to cold, drought and poor soil. They can grow on land with a cool climate and relatively poor soil quality, so they are mostly distributed in high-cold regions such as Inner Mongolia, the Bashang area of Hebei, Shanxi, Gansu and Qinghai. They prefer a cool and humid climate and are not tolerant of high temperatures. Their growth period is relatively short, making them suitable for cultivation in areas with a relatively short frost-free period.

When planting oats, plots whose previous crop was legumes or potatoes are generally chosen, and crop rotation is practiced to avoid reduced yields caused by continuous cropping. Sowing time varies with regional climate, and is mostly carried out after spring temperatures stabilize; drilling is used to facilitate intertillage and weeding. In field management, it is necessary to thin seedlings and remove weeds in a timely manner, and to pay attention to preventing lodging and controlling common pests such as aphids.

The nutritional value of oats is relatively prominent among cereals, with high contents of dietary fiber and protein, among which beta-glucan has received widespread attention. Common processed products include oatmeal and oat flour. In addition, oat straw is soft and highly palatable, making it a high-quality forage for livestock such as cattle and sheep. It has high application value, and its cultivation prospects are also relatively broad.
