Introduction to Spring and Summer Cabbage Planting Techniques and Management Points
Spring and summer cabbage planting refers to the production method of cultivating cabbage under spring and summer temperature and light conditions. It not only fills the market gap outside the autumn and winter Chinese cabbage season, but also places higher demands on varieties and field management. Because the climate differs markedly between the two seasons, low temperatures in spring easily cause premature bolting, while high temperature and high humidity in summer easily induce pests and diseases, so targeted technical measures are needed at planting time.
Variety selection is the key to success or failure in spring and summer cabbage planting. For spring sowing, early-maturing varieties with strong winter hardiness and low bolting tendency should be selected, and the sowing date should be arranged appropriately to avoid the low-temperature vernalization stage; for summer sowing, varieties with good heat tolerance, moisture tolerance and disease resistance should be chosen. Before sowing, the seeds can be sun-dried to improve germination uniformity and seedling quality.
For field management, plots with higher terrain and convenient drainage and irrigation should be chosen, and fully decomposed organic fertilizer should be applied as base fertilizer. During the growing period, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, apply topdressing lightly and frequently, and drain and loosen the soil promptly after rain. During high summer temperatures, shade nets can be used to lower the temperature and insect nets to block pests, creating a relatively suitable growing environment for cabbage.
Common diseases of spring and summer cabbage include soft rot and downy mildew, while insect pests are mainly cabbage caterpillars, aphids and diamondback moths. Agricultural measures such as cleaning the field and rational crop rotation should be the foundation, with pesticide control used when necessary. Harvesting should also be timely. In summer, with high temperatures and rapid growth, the crop should be harvested as soon as it reaches market maturity to avoid head splitting or leaf aging that affects quality.
