Prepared Yuanzhi is a processed product of the commonly used Chinese herb Yuanzhi (thinleaf milkwort root). It is made from the dried roots of the Polygalaceae plant Yuanzhi (Polygala tenuifolia) or Ovate-leaf Yuanzhi (Polygala sibirica), which are cleaned, selected and cored, then boiled or soaked and mixed with licorice juice. After processing, the surface of the medicinal material darkens in color, carries a slight licorice aroma, and becomes dry and crisp in texture, with medicinal properties noticeably milder than the raw product.

The traditional method is to first slice licorice and decoct it into a soup, remove the residue, then add Yuanzhi segments and simmer over gentle heat until the liquid is fully absorbed, after which they are taken out and sun-dried. Raw Yuanzhi has a certain irritating effect on the throat and gastrointestinal tract, and some people easily experience nausea and discomfort after taking it. Processing with licorice juice can moderate the medicinal properties and reduce irritation, making it gentler to use.

In terms of effects, Prepared Yuanzhi has the actions of calming the mind and boosting intellect, resolving phlegm and reducing swelling. It is often used for insomnia and frequent dreaming, palpitations and poor memory caused by disharmony between the heart and kidney, as well as coughing with copious phlegm and similar conditions. Compared with raw Yuanzhi, Prepared Yuanzhi has weaker dryness and irritation, and its mind-calming and phlegm-resolving effects are gentler, so it is often used together with other mind-calming and phlegm-resolving medicinal materials.

It should be noted that although Prepared Yuanzhi and Yuanzhi come from the same source, whether processing has been carried out determines the difference between the two in medicinal properties and suitable applications, so the choice should be made according to specific needs. Yuanzhi has strong adaptability and prefers a cool, dry climate, and it is grown more in the mountainous areas of northern China. Regarding planting returns, high-yield cultivation techniques and market conditions, herb growers can learn about them fully before planting and then arrange production reasonably.
