The big-headed turtle, whose scientific name is Platysternon megacephalum, gets its name because its upper beak curves like an eagle's beak. Its head is so large that it cannot be retracted into its shell. It is mainly distributed in mountain streams in southern China and is a semi-aquatic turtle. It has a rather fierce temperament and is a very strong climber.

Prices for the big-headed turtle vary widely on the market and are usually related to the individual's size, appearance, age and origin. Captive-bred hatchlings are relatively affordable, while adults and breeding turtles often command higher prices because of the long rearing cycle and the difficulty of breeding them; appearance factors such as the completeness of the carapace and body color also affect pricing. Supply and demand differ from place to place, so the actual market should be taken as the standard for current prices.

It must be especially noted that the big-headed turtle has been listed as a national second-class protected wild animal. Catching, selling or buying wild individuals is illegal, and legal trade is generally limited to individuals bred by units and individuals holding the relevant permits. Before buying, you should verify the source and obtain the corresponding certificates, and never break the law just to save money.

When choosing one, pick an individual that reacts quickly, has bright eyes and an intact, uninjured shell. For keeping, the big-headed turtle likes cool, clean water, so a shallow-water area and hiding places should be provided. Water that is too warm or deteriorating water quality can easily cause disease. In daily care, you can feed it small fish, small shrimp and turtle food. It is an outstanding escape artist, so the enclosure needs to be heightened and escape-proof measures taken.
