Most cherry worms are fruit fly larvae, and control must start with orchard management

What people commonly call cherry worms usually refers to the small white worms found in ripe cherry fruit, which are mainly the larvae of fruit flies. In addition, cherries can also be attacked during production by pests such as cherry fruit sawflies, fruit borers, aphids and red spider mites, but the worms consumers encounter when eating are mostly fruit fly larvae.

Adult fruit flies are very small and like to lay eggs on the surface of ripe, damaged or split fruit; after the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into the flesh to feed and cause damage. The riper the fruit and the softer the skin, the higher the chance of eggs being laid, so wormy fruit mostly appears on fully ripe, overripe or mechanically damaged cherries.

Many consumers worry that eating wormy cherries will affect their health. Generally speaking, fruit fly larvae do not use humans as hosts, and accidentally eating a small number is usually harmless, but it does affect appetite and the marketability of the fruit. Before eating, cherries can be soaked in lightly salted water for a period; after being irritated, the larvae will crawl out of the fruit surface, and then they can be rinsed clean with clear water.

For growers, reducing wormy fruit requires integrated management. Harvesting ripe fruit in a timely manner and removing fallen and rotting fruit can reduce breeding sites for adult flies; hanging sticky traps or attractant traps in the orchard can trap and kill adults; at the same time, pruning should be combined to improve ventilation and light penetration, and pesticides should be used scientifically according to the technical guidance of local plant protection departments. If tree care work such as autumn fertilization and greenhouse environment regulation is done solidly, the trees will be vigorous and the fruit's resistance to insects will also improve accordingly.
