The in-box fattening method for quail is a farming method in which quail to be fattened are placed in special rearing boxes for intensive fattening, and it is commonly used for rapid weight gain before culled laying quail and thin, weak quail are sent to market. Its principle is to reduce energy expenditure by narrowing the activity space, controlling light, and adjusting the feed, so that the quail put on fat and improve their meat quality in a relatively short time, thereby increasing their commercial value at sale.

The key to in-box fattening lies in restricting movement. Once the quail's activity space becomes smaller, physical exertion declines accordingly, and the nutrients eaten are more easily converted into fat deposition. The fattening box must be well ventilated and lined at the bottom with dry bedding, and the stocking density should not be too high; it is best if the quail can eat and drink freely without crowding one another.

As for feed, energy feeds such as corn and broken rice should predominate, appropriately supplemented with protein feed and green feed to ensure balanced nutrition. During the fattening period, the light should be dim rather than strong; a dim-light environment lets the quail rest quietly and reduces fighting and restlessness, which helps them put on fat. At the same time, feed and water must be provided on schedule, droppings cleaned frequently, and the inside of the box kept clean and dry to prevent disease.

This fattening method involves simple equipment, low investment, and easy daily management, making it well suited to small and medium-sized farmers, and it is especially often used for fattening culled quail before sale. Quail that have undergone short-term fattening are plump in body and fine and tender in meat, are more popular in the market, and this is a practical means of raising the utilization value of culled quail.
