Bananas originate in tropical and subtropical regions, and Taiwan, China is also an important producing area
Bananas are a typical tropical fruit tree. They favor a hot, humid climate with plenty of sunshine and are most afraid of frost and prolonged low temperatures, so their producing areas are concentrated in the tropical and subtropical zones between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. As long as there is sufficient rainfall and well-drained soil, bananas can grow almost year-round, and many producing areas harvest them all year long.
Globally, Asia, Africa, and Central and South America all have large areas under cultivation. The Philippines, Ecuador, and India are all well-known producing areas, supplying the international market in large quantities. In China, banana-producing areas are most concentrated in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan, and Fujian, where the climate is very suitable for large-scale planting.
Taiwan, China has a very long history of banana cultivation. Qishan in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Jiji in Nantou, and the Changhua and Taichung areas are all important producing areas, among which Qishan has long been known as the Kingdom of Bananas. In the early days, bananas from Taiwan, China were exported to Japan in large quantities. The large temperature difference between day and night in the mountainous areas gave the bananas a rich flavor, earning them a solid reputation.
The climate of the producing area directly affects the sweetness, aroma, and flesh texture of bananas, and also determines which varieties are suitable for cultivation. Common ones include Beijiao, Baodao banana, red-skinned banana, and plantain. When choosing bananas, pay more attention to the place of origin and the production season. It is easier to buy delicious fruit in season, and you can also better understand the journey of ingredients from the producing area to the table.
