The racing pigeon (homing pigeon) is a type of pigeon formed through long-term artificial selective breeding, with a strong homing instinct and flight endurance. It was historically used to carry messages, and today it is mostly used for racing activities and leisure keeping. Keeping racing pigeons well requires a combination of daily management and scientific training; neither can be dispensed with.

In terms of keeping, the loft should be built in a well-ventilated, dry, sunny place, and the interior should be kept clean and disinfected regularly to reduce the growth of pathogens. The feed is mainly grains such as corn, peas, wheat and sorghum, paired with health grit to supplement minerals, which helps digestion and bone development. Provide plenty of clean drinking water at ordinary times, and pay attention to observing the pigeons' mental state, droppings and feathers; if abnormalities are found, they should be isolated and handled promptly.

In terms of training, generally the young pigeons are first allowed to become familiar with the loft environment, starting with home flying, then gradually carrying out road training from near to far. The training intensity should proceed step by step, arranged flexibly according to the pigeon's age, physical condition and weather conditions, to avoid excessive fatigue affecting health. Regular home flying and timely release can exercise the racing pigeon's orientation ability and physical fitness.

Common problems during the keeping process include respiratory and digestive tract diseases, parasites and so on; prevention should be the priority, with good daily hygiene and environmental management. In addition, selecting and pairing breeding stock is also crucial; healthy breeders and a good bloodline are the foundation for breeding excellent racing pigeons. In short, as long as management is meticulous and training is proper, racing pigeons can maintain good condition and perform at their due level in racing.
