Apricots are rich in nutritional value, and eating them in moderation is good for your health
The apricot is the fruit of a tree in the genus Prunus of the rose family. When ripe, its skin is mostly yellow-orange, and its flesh is soft, juicy and has a distinctive sweet-and-sour flavor. It is both a common fresh fruit and a fruit that can be processed into dried fruit, jam, canned goods and many other forms, making it a popular member of summer seasonal fruit platters.
From a nutritional standpoint, the apricot stands out for being fairly rich in carotene, a component that the human body can convert into vitamin A, helping to maintain normal vision and healthy skin. In addition, apricots contain vitamin C, potassium and dietary fiber; the flesh is high in water and relatively low in calories, making it suitable for replenishing fluids in hot weather.
When apricots are sun-dried or oven-dried, they become dried apricots; as the water content drops, the concentration of sugars and minerals rises, the flavor becomes more intense, and they are often eaten as a snack while traveling or during a break at work. However, dried apricots have a high sugar density, so portions should be controlled even more carefully when eating them, and when buying processed products it is advisable to check the ingredient list to avoid excessive added sugar or salt.
Many people confuse almonds with apricots, but in fact the almond is the seed kernel inside the apricot pit, and its nutritional makeup differs from that of the flesh. Bitter almonds contain amygdalin, and eating too many raw may cause discomfort, so they usually need to be processed before they can be eaten; the sweet almonds commonly used to make pastries and drinks are relatively mild in nature.
When selecting fresh apricots, those with golden, plump skin, a natural fruity aroma and a slightly springy feel are best. Ripe apricots do not keep long, so it is best to eat them soon after buying or store them in the refrigerator; because their fruit acid content is not low, people with sensitive stomachs should not eat too many at once on an empty stomach. Only by tasting them in moderation can you comfortably enjoy this seasonal sweetness.
