What mosquitoes are afraid of can be understood from several aspects: the environment, smells and natural enemies. Simply put, they fear dry, well-ventilated environments lacking standing water, and they also fear certain pungent smells and the animals that feed on them. Understanding these habits makes everyday mosquito prevention and repellent measures more targeted.

First, they fear dry, clean environments. Mosquitoes cannot reproduce without standing water. Whether it is a flower pot saucer, an old discarded tire or a rooftop gutter, as long as standing water is not cleaned up over time, larvae can easily breed in large numbers. After rain in particular, be sure to empty the water in containers promptly, keep drains clear, and keep indoor and outdoor environments dry and tidy; then mosquitoes naturally have fewer places to hide and lay eggs.

Second, they fear certain smells. The scents given off by plants such as mint, mugwort and mosquito-repellent grass have a certain repellent effect on mosquitoes. Growing a few pots on a balcony or windowsill can provide supplementary mosquito prevention. In addition, mosquito coils, electric mosquito liquid and various mosquito repellent products mostly interfere with mosquitoes through special smells, making them reluctant to approach people.

Mosquitoes also have quite a few natural enemies in nature. Dragonflies, bats and frogs all prey on adult mosquitoes, while fish are the nemesis of larvae in water, so stocking small mosquito-eating fish in some landscape ponds is also a common mosquito control measure. While maintaining ecological balance, these natural enemies also help suppress mosquito numbers.

It should be noted that a single method is often unable to completely prevent mosquitoes. It is best to combine removing standing water, installing window and door screens, and reasonably using mosquito repellent products. Mosquitoes are active in summer and autumn, and bites not only cause itching but may also spread disease. Only by preventing early and cleaning up early can you truly stay away from the annoyance of mosquitoes.
