The functions of a tail include maintaining balance, keeping warm and transmitting information

The tail is the part extending from the end of the body in many animals, made up of vertebrae, muscles and hair. The tails of different animals vary greatly in shape and function, but they can broadly be grouped into several major categories: movement, balance, protection and information transmission.

In terms of movement and balance, the role of the tail is particularly prominent. A fish's tail swings from side to side, providing both the power to move forward and control over its swimming direction; when a cat walks along a narrow wall, it relies on its tail to adjust its center of gravity at any moment and keep its body steady; among monkeys, some species can curl their long tails around branches to help themselves move nimbly through the trees.

In terms of protection and warmth, the tail also plays an important role. Cattle and horses often swish their tails to drive away mosquitoes and flies; animals living in cold regions cover their mouths and noses with their fluffy tails to keep warm while resting; the tails of some sheep breeds can store fat, providing an energy reserve when food is scarce. Beavers also slap the water with their flat, large tails to warn their companions.

The tail is also an important tool for animals to express emotions. A dog wagging its tail mostly indicates excitement and friendliness, while tucking its tail may indicate nervousness and fear; when a deer spots danger, it raises its white tail to alert its companions. In daily rearing, the condition of the tail can also reflect an animal's health; if there is trauma, swelling, hair loss or abnormal movement, checks should be made and the tail should be kept clean and dry; whether tail docking is needed should be based on breed characteristics and farming needs, and carried out under the guidance of professionals.
