Tie Bao Jin is a vine-like shrub of the genus Berchemia in the Rhamnaceae family, and it is also a traditional Chinese herbal medicine widely circulated in South China. It gets its name because the outer bark of the root is dark brown, resembling iron rust, while the cut surface is yellowish, as if wrapped in a layer of gold, so people vividly call it Tie Bao Jin. The stems and branches are slender, the leaves are relatively small, and it often twines or climbs among shrubs on hillsides and roadsides.

Tie Bao Jin is mainly distributed in southern provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian. It prefers a warm and humid climate and mostly grows on sunny hillsides, in shrub thickets or at the edges of open forests. It has strong adaptability and a well-developed root system, and can survive even on relatively barren mountain land. In the past, it was mainly collected from the wild, but now some areas have begun to try artificial cultivation to meet medicinal demand.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Tie Bao Jin is used medicinally with its root, and it is generally believed to have effects such as dispelling wind and promoting diuresis, reducing swelling and relieving pain, and activating blood and dispersing stasis. People often use it in folk remedies to help regulate coughs, traumatic injuries, rheumatic bone pain and other discomforts. In some areas of Lingnan, there is also a habit of using Tie Bao Jin to make soup or steep wine. However, its usage and dosage are quite particular, and it is recommended to use it under the guidance of a professional physician rather than taking it blindly on one's own.

Although Tie Bao Jin sounds like metal, it is actually an authentic plant medicine. For people who want to understand or use it, first clearly identifying the variety, becoming familiar with its characteristics, and then applying it reasonably according to one's own constitution is the way to better bring out its value.
