Acorus tatarinowii is the dried rhizome of a perennial herbaceous plant in the Araceae family, named for its habit of growing among mountain streams and rocks, and it is a commonly used orifice-opening medicinal herb in traditional Chinese medicine. Its taste is pungent and its nature is warm; it enters the Heart and Stomach meridians. The plant carries a crisp, clear fragrance and has long been regarded as a herb that is both ornamental and medicinal.

In traditional Chinese medicine theory, Acorus tatarinowii's main effects are opening the orifices and calming the spirit, and transforming dampness and harmonizing the stomach. It is often used in formulated preparations to regulate conditions such as forgetfulness and insomnia, tinnitus and deafness, abdominal distension, and poor appetite. It contains active components such as volatile oils, which are also the main reason for its aromatic odor. However, these effects are mostly manifested in the form of compound formulations, and its effect when used alone is limited.

In daily use, Acorus tatarinowii is mainly taken as a decoction, infused in water, or added to meals. A small amount of sliced rhizome can be brewed with boiling water as a tea substitute, or it can be added when stewing soup or cooking congee, for example in medicinal soup dishes stewed together with pig heart, lean meat, and the like. The usual decoction dosage is about three to ten grams; when added to a decoction it should not be boiled for a long time, so as to avoid the loss of aromatic components.

It should be noted that Acorus tatarinowii is a medicinal material rather than an ordinary food ingredient, and it is not suitable for everyone. Those with yin deficiency and yang excess, or with restlessness and excessive sweating, should use it with caution; pregnant women and people with special constitutions should consult a physician before use, and prolonged or excessive consumption should be avoided to prevent physical discomfort.
