Edible medicinal herbs refer to natural raw materials that have both medicinal value and can be used as everyday food, originating from the traditional concept of food and medicine sharing the same source. Most of these materials have mild properties and have long been used in everyday cooking such as soups, congee and tea, adding flavor while also providing a certain conditioning effect.

There are many common types of edible medicinal herbs. Tonic types include goji berry, red date, Chinese yam, lotus seed, longan and poria; heat-clearing types include chrysanthemum, honeysuckle and mint; and qi-regulating and blood-activating types include angelica, astragalus and ginger. In addition, gastrodia, lily and coix seed also frequently appear in home-style medicinal dishes, each with different flavors and uses.

In everyday use, edible medicinal herbs are mostly incorporated into dishes in the form of medicinal cuisine, for example adding red dates and goji berries when stewing soup, putting Chinese yam and lotus seed into sweet congee, or brewing tea with chrysanthemum and mint. When using them, it is best to pair them appropriately according to the season and individual constitution, proceeding gradually and avoiding blindly taking tonics, so as to achieve better results.

It should be noted that although edible medicinal herbs have mild properties, the amount used should still be controlled. Pregnant women, people with chronic diseases or those taking medication are advised to consult a professional physician or pharmacist first. When purchasing, also pay attention to the place of origin and quality, confirm there is no mold and no off odor, and buy through proper channels to ensure food safety.
