Dendrobium is the collective term for plants in the genus Dendrobium of the orchid family. There are many species, including both the medicinally valuable Dendrobium officinale and Dendrobium nobile, as well as the ornamental Dendrobium orchids with their showy flowers, often used as Lunar New Year flowers. Because different varieties differ noticeably in morphology, many people first build an intuitive impression through Dendrobium pictures before buying, identifying or growing them.

In pictures, Dendrobium stems are mostly cylindrical or slightly flattened, with distinct nodes; some varieties have slender, elongated stems, while others are short and thick like a drumstick. The leaves are mostly leathery and arranged alternately on both sides of the stem. The flowers often open in clusters, and the lip is rich in color and uniquely shaped, usually the part easiest to recognize in a picture.

Different varieties show different features in pictures. The stem surface of Dendrobium officinale is often iron-green or yellow-green, with traces of membranous leaf sheaths left at the nodes; the stem of Dendrobium nobile resembles a hairpin, with larger flowers, white petals often paired with a pink or purplish-red lip; ornamental Dendrobium orchids have rich flower colors, with combinations such as purplish-red and yellow-white all being common.

It is worth noting that online pictures are for reference only, and lighting and shooting angle both affect color rendering, so it is hard to judge the true quality of medicinal material from pictures alone. Growing enthusiasts can use pictures to become familiar with plant form and flower structure, then combine this with content such as growing methods and medium selection for comprehensive learning; only by looking and comparing more can they avoid detours.
