Taiwan Dendrobium orchids with growing medium successfully open the door to the United States, setting another global first
The Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan has just received notice from the Economic Division of our representative office in the United States that the United States Department of Agriculture announced yesterday (the 30th) the quarantine regulations allowing Taiwan Dendrobium orchid plants to be exported to the United States with growing medium attached, effective from March 1. After 6 years of consultation efforts, the Council responded to questions multiple times in accordance with the US side's risk assessment and supplemented information, finally succeeding in opening the US quarantine door, making Taiwan the first country in the world currently able to export Dendrobium orchid plants with growing medium attached to the United States. This is another global first following the export of Phalaenopsis and Oncidium potted flowers to the United States.
Opening up new export items for the orchid industry; greenhouse applications from growers accepted starting today
The Council of Agriculture pointed out that Dendrobium orchids are diverse and colorful in color, size, shape and characteristics, and are deeply loved by the market. In the past, they were mostly exported to various countries as cut flowers, with Japan being the main trading country. In recent years, breeding results for potted flower varieties have been abundant, and there is already a business opportunity for exporting Dendrobium orchid seedlings. Now that US approval has been obtained for export with growing medium attached, the loss rate during transportation can be effectively reduced, helping to increase the quantity and quality of Dendrobium orchids exported to the United States, and also providing orchid growers with a new market opportunity.
The Council of Agriculture explained that, to help growers arrange production as soon as possible, the branch offices of the Council's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine in each jurisdiction can accept greenhouse applications from growers starting today. If it is a greenhouse currently qualified for exporting Phalaenopsis to the United States, the greenhouse does not need to be cleared. If it is not a greenhouse currently exporting Phalaenopsis to the United States, after the greenhouse is cleared and verified as qualified by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, it can become an approved greenhouse for Dendrobium orchid plants exported to the United States.
Continuing the advantage of Phalaenopsis; beautiful and elegant, marketed around the world
The Council of Agriculture pointed out that in the 93rd year of the Republic of China, our Phalaenopsis broke through the US quarantine barrier and obtained the advantage of being the only one in the world able to be exported to the United States with growing medium attached. In recent years, greenhouse equipment, cultivation management and production standards have all visibly improved, gaining recognition and affirmation from international circles, achieving a total export volume of 21.26 million Phalaenopsis plants to the United States in the 106th year of the Republic of China, worth about 51 million US dollars, an extremely outstanding result.
The Council of Agriculture emphasized that allowing Dendrobium orchid plants to be exported to the United States with growing medium attached will effectively raise the level of our Dendrobium orchid greenhouse facilities and establish a Dendrobium orchid brand image. Relevant government departments will fully carry out their roles of guidance and supervision, and even more so, Dendrobium orchid producers and industry groups need to cooperate fully, working together to market Taiwan's healthy and beautiful Dendrobium orchid plants around the world.
