How Much Does Dendrobium Cost Per Jin? Variety, Quality and Origin Determine the Price
Dendrobium is the collective name for plants in the genus Dendrobium of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It can be grown as an ornamental flower and is also a traditional Chinese medicinal herb in common use. Common varieties include Dendrobium officinale (tiepi shihu), Dendrobium nobile (jinchai shihu) and Dendrobium huoshanense (Huoshan shihu). When people talk about the price of dendrobium on the market, they generally mean fresh stems or dried products priced by the jin, and the price differences between varieties are quite striking.
The main factors affecting the price of dendrobium are variety, place of origin, cultivation method and processing form. Generally speaking, prized varieties such as Dendrobium officinale and Dendrobium huoshanense cost more than ordinary dendrobium, and wild-simulated or understory-grown plants cost more than those forced in greenhouses. Dried products processed into fengdou are usually priced higher per unit than fresh stems because they use more raw material and involve a complicated process. In addition, there is a clear price gap between top-grade goods with plump mucilage, clean and free of impurities, and goods of poor appearance.
Looking at the market situation, dendrobium prices are not fixed; they rise and fall with the volume coming onto the market, supply and demand, and quality grade, and quotes for the same variety in different regions and through different channels may differ considerably. Therefore, the specific prices circulating online can only serve as a reference, and the actual transaction price still has to be judged in light of that year's market conditions and the merchant's grading standards.
When buying, it is advisable not to focus only on the unit price. First confirm the variety and origin information, then check whether the stems are firm, whether the cut surface is rich in mucilage, and whether there is any mould, deterioration or off odour. When used as a food ingredient or in medicinal dishes, it should be consumed in moderation; people with special constitutions or underlying diseases are best advised to consult a doctor first and avoid taking supplements blindly.
