Apple production in China is mainly concentrated in two major regions: the Bohai Bay and the Loess Plateau.
The apple is a typical temperate deciduous fruit tree that favors a climate with ample sunlight and a marked temperature difference between day and night, so its main growing areas are mostly concentrated in hilly and plateau regions with deep soil layers and good drainage. In China, apple cultivation has long formed two dominant production regions, the Bohai Bay and the Loess Plateau, where the soil, water and sunlight conditions are highly favorable for the fruit to accumulate sugars and develop full color.
The Bohai Bay region is dominated by Shandong, Liaoning and other places, among which Yantai in Shandong has a long history of apple cultivation; the Red Fuji it produces has crisp, sweet flesh and abundant juice, and is well known in both domestic and international markets. The coastal area of Liaoning has a cool climate, and the apples it produces have a refreshing flavor; it is likewise an important apple supply area in the north.
The Loess Plateau region covers Shaanxi, Gansu, Shanxi and western Henan, among other places, with higher altitude, intense sunshine and a large temperature difference between day and night. Luochuan in Shaanxi and Tianshui in Gansu are representative production areas; the Huaniu apple produced in Tianshui has a deep red color and a rich aroma, while Aksu in Xinjiang is favored by consumers for its sugar-core apples, in which sugars condense into a translucent form near the core.
On a larger scale, China is an important apple-producing country in the world, and its output has long ranked among the highest in the world; in addition, Japan, the United States, Poland and other places also have large-scale cultivation. Apples from different production areas each have their own characteristics in crispness, sweet-to-sour ratio and aroma. When buying, you can choose according to the style of the production area; if you prefer a crisp, sweet and juicy texture, you can pay more attention to fruit from the dominant northern production areas.
