Fresh red dates are as crisp as apples and rich in vitamin C; the Gongguan Red Date Festival launches around Major Heat

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

Tomorrow is the solar term "Major Heat," the hottest time of the year and also the season when Miaoli jujubes ripen to red and head toward harvest. To promote fresh jujubes, the Gongguan Township Farmers' Association in Miaoli County will hold the "106th Year Miaoli County Gongguan Township Jujube Festival" over the next two days, and is also specially launching a reassuring jujube label that has passed "no pesticide residue" testing, so people can eat with even greater peace of mind.

Fresh jujubes are crisp like apples and rich in vitamin C

Gongguan Township in Miaoli County is the only specialized jujube cultivation area in all of Taiwan, with about 54 hectares planted to jujubes. Mid-July to late August each year is the jujube season, when the fruit turns from its original green to bright red, forming heavy clusters of fruit. Lin Youshi, director of the extension department of the Gongguan Township Farmers' Association in Miaoli County, said that most people do not really understand that jujubes can also be eaten raw like a fruit. "Jujubes are very tasty eaten raw, with a crisp texture, and they are rich in large amounts of vitamin C, just like apples."

Jujube mini-trips offer food and fun

At the event site from July 22 to July 23, there will be fresh jujubes and creative dishes made from jujubes to taste, as well as local agricultural products to buy. That day there will also be a mini-trip to Shiqiang Community, the largest jujube production area in Gongguan, as well as a jujube snack DIY activity, the latter of which can be signed up for on site. For people interested in going on their own, Lin Youshi suggests that the Jujube Avenue in front of the Gongguan Farmers' Association branch is a sight not to be missed. Those interested in picking fruit, or buying fresh jujubes, can also call the farmers' association.
