Neijiang black pig originates from Neijiang, Sichuan, and its characteristics and breeding value are very prominent
The Neijiang black pig is a local pig breed native to the Neijiang area of Sichuan Province, and it is also one of the well-known black-haired pig breeds with a long history of raising in China. It is named after its place of origin and gradually took shape over long-term farmer raising in the local area. It has now been included in the national-level list of livestock and poultry genetic resources for protection, and is a local genetic resource that requires key conservation.
In appearance, the Neijiang black pig has black hair all over its body, a relatively large build, a broad and short head, relatively deep wrinkles on the forehead, large and drooping ears, loose skin, and obvious folds on the body surface, which are distinctive features that distinguish it from other pig breeds. It has strong adaptability and tolerance to roughage, has good adaptability to the local climate and raising conditions, and also has relatively good reproductive performance, strong maternal instincts, and a relatively high survival rate of piglets.
In terms of meat value, Neijiang black pig meat is tender and rich in aroma, suitable for making traditional Sichuan-style foods such as twice-cooked pork, cured meat, and sausages, and is favored by many consumers. In the past, it was also often used as a parent stock for crossbreeding improvement and played a role in the improvement of pig breeds in many places in the south. However, compared with introduced lean-type pigs, it grows relatively slowly, has a longer raising cycle, and also has a slightly higher fat ratio.
During raising, attention should be paid to keeping the pen clean and dry, doing routine immunization and epidemic prevention work well, and in terms of feed, green roughage can be reasonably used and properly matched with concentrated feed. In recent years, some local cooperatives have driven farmers to raise Neijiang black pigs by uniformly providing breeding stock and technical guidance, gradually developing it into a characteristic industry that helps farmers increase income.
