Milk cabbage is a common variety of non-heading Chinese cabbage. It belongs to the cruciferous genus Brassica and is named for its short, thick stalks, milky white color, and tender leaves. It is widely grown in southern regions such as Guangdong and Guangxi, and is one of the common leafy greens on the dining table, with a sweet, soft, and tender taste that consumers love.

Milk cabbage prefers a cool climate, has strong cold tolerance, and also tolerates a certain amount of heat and humidity. Its growing period is short, and it can be sown for most of the year. When planting, choose loose, fertile land with good drainage. When preparing the soil, apply plenty of decomposed organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer, make flat beds, and then sow directly by broadcasting. After the seedlings emerge, thin them in time and maintain a reasonable plant spacing.

Field management centers on water and fertilizer. Milk cabbage has many leaves and a high water requirement, so the soil should be kept moist during the growing period. Water lightly and frequently, and avoid alternating drought and flooding. For topdressing, mainly use quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, applying it in small amounts several times along with watering to promote rapid leaf growth. At the same time, remove weeds and watch for common pests such as aphids and cabbage caterpillars. Give priority to agricultural and physical control methods, and leave enough pre-harvest interval before harvest.

When milk cabbage grows to a full plant shape with plump, tender leaves, it can be harvested in batches. Harvesting too late makes it easy for the plants to age and decline in quality. Milk cabbage can be eaten whole and is often used for stir-frying, soup, or hot pot. It is simple to prepare and has a mild flavor. Because its growth cycle is short and management is relatively easy, it is suitable both for large-scale production and for small-scale growing in home gardens.
