Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma) is a large medicinal fungus of the genus Ganoderma in the family Polyporaceae. It mostly grows on dead wood or tree stumps of broadleaf trees. Its fruiting body is semicircular or kidney-shaped, with a lacquer-like sheen on the surface, and it has been regarded as an important tonic material for health since ancient times. Among traditional medicinal varieties, the red reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) and the purple reishi (Ganoderma sinense) are the most common; the two differ slightly in form and composition, and they are also the main sources of reishi products on the market.

The main active components of reishi include reishi polysaccharides and triterpenoids. Traditionally it is believed to calm the mind and aid sleep, relieve cough and asthma, and support vital energy and consolidate the constitution, and it is often used to regulate the health of people who are weak, sleep poorly, or tire easily. In modern times it is mostly used as a health food or a medicinal diet ingredient to help boost immunity and relieve fatigue, and it is a relatively mild material for daily tonic use.

In daily use, reishi can be sliced and boiled in water to drink as tea, or simmered in soup with pork ribs, chicken, and the like, with a slightly bitter taste and a sweet aftertaste; reishi spore powder is a more popular deep-processed product. It should be noted that the raw material sources of different products vary greatly: products made from fruiting bodies and those made from mycelium are not the same in composition and content, so when purchasing, pay attention to the ingredient labeling on the packaging.

Although reishi is mild in nature, it is not suitable for everyone. People allergic to fungi should avoid eating it, and pregnant women, children, and those taking medication are advised to consult a professional first. In addition, reishi is a health-regulating material and cannot replace medication to treat disease. When you feel unwell, you should still seek medical attention in time and take a rational view of its tonic value.
