Forsythia is a deciduous shrub in the genus Forsythia of the family Oleaceae. In early spring it blooms before its leaves emerge, covering its branches in golden yellow. It is both a common ornamental flowering plant and a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. The medicinal part is mainly its dried fruit, which is divided by harvest time into green forsythia and old forsythia: green forsythia is the fruit harvested when it is just ripening and still green, while old forsythia is the fruit harvested after it has fully matured.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, forsythia is bitter in taste and slightly cold in nature, and enters the Lung, Heart, and Small Intestine meridians. It has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and dissipating nodules, and dispersing wind-heat. It is often used for wind-heat colds, sore and swollen throat, and the early stage of warm-febrile diseases, and among the people it has long been known as the sacred herb for sores. It is very commonly used together with honeysuckle, and forsythia also appears in the classic formula Yinqiao San.

For everyday consumption, the most common way to use forsythia is to steep it in water as a tea. An appropriate amount of dried fruit can be used, or it can be combined with honeysuckle, chrysanthemum, and the like, then brewed with boiling water and drunk. In some regions, a small amount of forsythia is also added when cooking porridge or making soup, providing a food-therapy effect of clearing heat and reducing internal heat, and the amount used is generally not too large.

It should be noted that forsythia is slightly cold in nature, so people with weak and cold spleen and stomach or a cold-leaning constitution should not consume it in large amounts over the long term, and pregnant women and patients with chronic diseases had best consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. After all, forsythia belongs to the category of medicinal materials, so its amount should be controlled when consumed, and it must not be drunk without restraint like ordinary tea. Only through scientific and reasonable use can its proper value be brought into play.
