Longan is an evergreen fruit tree in the soapberry family (Sapindaceae). It thrives in hot, humid subtropical climates, and its native range lies in South China and Southeast Asia. Any region with warm winters and ample summer and autumn rainfall can potentially become a longan-growing area, so global longan cultivation is generally concentrated in warm, low-latitude zones.

In terms of distribution, Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian on the Chinese mainland are the traditional main producing areas, while Hainan, Sichuan and Yunnan also grow the crop; in Taiwan, China, cultivation is concentrated in the central and southern parts, and it is commonly grown around Tainan, Taichung, Nantou and Chiayi, while Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Vietnam are also important producing areas. Different local climates give rise to slightly different varieties and flavors.

Longan has certain requirements for its environment. During the growing period it needs plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil, and it is vulnerable to frost damage in winter; if the spring flowering period brings low temperatures or excessive rain, fruiting is easily affected. The flowers are rich in nectar and are an important nectar source for honeybees, which is why longan honey is also a common by-product of producing areas. In recent years, when flowering has been poor, bee colonies have often had to seek other nectar sources, showing how closely the fruit trees and ecology of a producing area are connected.

In terms of uses, besides being eaten fresh, longan is often processed into products such as dried longan and guiyuan. Many producing areas still keep the traditional methods of sun-drying or baking, creating a distinctive local industry. When buying, pay attention to the harvest season and origin information; summer is the main season for fresh fruit, and products shipped directly from the producing area usually retain their original flavor better.
