Forsythia Picture Gallery: Recognizing Forsythia's Morphological Features from Flowers, Leaves, Branches and Fruit
Forsythia is a deciduous shrub in the genus Forsythia of the family Oleaceae, and it is also one of the most recognizable flowering plants of early spring. Most of the forsythia pictures circulating online were taken during its blooming period, showing branches covered in golden yellow with flowers appearing before the leaves, which is precisely the typical feature that sets it apart from many other spring flowering trees and shrubs. Whether as a landscaping ornamental tree or a medicinal plant, forsythia has always attracted attention.
As seen in the pictures, the forsythia corolla usually has four lobes and is golden yellow, with flowers clustered in the leaf axils of one-year-old branches; at peak bloom, leaves are almost invisible on the branches. Its leaves are opposite, mostly ovate, with serrated edges, and some leaves even show a three-lobed form. The branches are slender and arching, hollow inside at the internodes, and the old branches are grayish brown; these details are relatively easy to identify in close-up pictures.
When looking at forsythia pictures, the most common confusion is mixing it up with winter jasmine. The winter jasmine corolla usually has six lobes, and its branchlets are green and fairly slender and soft, whereas forsythia has a four-lobed corolla and hollow branches; grasping these few points is basically enough to tell them apart. The closely related Forsythia viridissima also looks similar, and when distinguishing them, one can pay attention to the differences in the form of the branch pith.
Besides its ornamental value, the dried fruit of forsythia can be used as medicine, making it one of the traditionally commonly used Chinese medicinal materials; it is cold- and drought-tolerant with a well-developed root system, so it is also often used for barren hill greening and soil and water conservation. To capture ideal forsythia pictures, it is best to go to parks, green spaces or plantations in early spring during the blooming period; on a sunny day with ample light, the golden flower color will appear even more bright and lovely.
