Aloe vera is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant with thick, fleshy leaves full of juice, and since ancient times it has been regarded as a multi-purpose plant that can be grown for ornament and used as medicine. Its medicinal parts come mainly from the leaves: the transparent gel in the leaf pulp and the yellow sap near the rind both contain aloin, aloe-emodin, polysaccharides, amino acids and various vitamins, and these substances form the basis of aloe vera's medicinal value.

In traditional medicinal experience, aloe vera is cold in nature and bitter in taste, and is mostly used to purge and relieve constipation and to clear liver fire, giving it a certain regulating effect on problems such as constipation due to heat accumulation. In modern times, aloe vera is more commonly used externally; the gel has a mild texture with moisturizing and soothing properties, and is often used to care for dry skin and relieve discomfort after sun exposure, and it also appears widely in skincare and hair care products.

It should be noted that not all aloes have the same medicinal value. Aloe vera (Curaçao aloe) is a relatively common variety in the medicinal and edible fields, and Aloe arborescens and others also have a traditional use in some regions, while many ornamental aloes or similar-looking plants are not suitable for consumption, and accidental ingestion may cause discomfort, so the source of the variety should be confirmed before use.

The way aloe vera is used also deserves attention. It is cold in nature, and excessive internal use can easily cause diarrhea or gastrointestinal discomfort, so pregnant women and people with a cold-deficient constitution should be especially cautious; before external use, it is advisable to test it first on a small area of skin such as the inner wrist to see whether there are allergic reactions such as redness, swelling or itching. Overall, aloe vera is suitable as an aid for daily care and health maintenance, but if obvious health problems arise, medical attention should still be sought promptly, and it should not be relied on alone to handle them.
