The radish is a biennial or annual herbaceous plant in the Brassicaceae family. The edible part is its swollen fleshy root, and it is also one of the most common root vegetables on the dining table. Common varieties include white radish (daikon), green radish, the red-fleshed "xinlimei" radish, and the small cherry radish, with slight differences in texture and pungency among them.

From a nutritional standpoint, radishes are high in water content and relatively low in calories, containing vitamin C, dietary fiber, and minerals such as potassium. The distinctive sharp taste of raw radish comes from pungent compounds produced when glucosinolates break down. Folk wisdom often says radishes aid digestion and cut through greasiness; adding a few chunks of radish when stewing meat or cooking hot pot both absorbs flavor and refreshes the palate.

Radishes can be eaten in many ways: raw in salads, simmered in clear soups, braised in soy sauce, or dried into radish strips or pickled into salted vegetables. Radish greens can also be blanched and served as a cold salad or used as a filling. When selecting radishes, choose ones that feel heavy for their size, have smooth skin, and few root hairs. Stored too long, they tend to become spongy inside, and the texture noticeably deteriorates.

Radishes are easy to grow and keep well, and they often appear on family dining tables and on school nutrition lunch menus, making them an economical and versatile home ingredient. Folk sayings claim that eating radishes cancels out the effects of medicine and conflicts with ginseng, but there is currently no sufficient basis for this, and there is no need for excessive concern when eating them in moderation as part of a regular diet. However, radishes are cooling in nature, so people with sensitive stomachs should not eat large amounts raw on an empty stomach; cooking them makes them gentler to eat, and only a balanced diet will keep you healthier.
