Deer Penis: Benefits, Uses and How to Consume It Explained
Deer penis is the external reproductive organ of the male deer, generally consisting of two parts, the penis and the testicles, which is processed into a traditional tonic food through steps such as cleaning, shaping and drying. In the traditional understanding of Chinese medicine, deer penis is believed to tonify the kidney and strengthen yang, and to benefit essence and nourish blood, and is often used to regulate conditions such as aversion to cold and fatigue caused by insufficient kidney yang.
It should be noted that these effects mainly come from the empirical summaries of traditional medicine, and individual constitutions vary greatly, so the actual effects differ from person to person. Deer penis is warm in nature and is relatively suitable as a tonic for people with a cold-deficient constitution and insufficient energy, but those with yin deficiency and hyperactive fire, or with conditions such as fever or inflammation, should not consume it blindly, and it is advisable to take it under professional guidance.
There are relatively many ways to consume deer penis; the most common is to make deer penis wine, by slicing dried deer penis and steeping it sealed with baijiu, then drinking a moderate amount after letting it stand for a period. It can also be used to make stews, simmered together with ingredients such as chicken, pork ribs, Chinese yam or goji berries over a slow fire, giving a rich-tasting soup. Another method is to dry the deer penis and grind it into powder, to be taken with meals.
When consuming deer penis, one should pay attention to moderation and should not take a large amount as a tonic all at once, so as to avoid discomfort such as internal heat. When purchasing, choose through proper channels and select products that are dry and free of off-odors, and in daily storage take care to protect against moisture and insects. Pregnant women, minors, and people with chronic diseases had best consult a doctor before consuming, to ensure that the tonic is safe and reasonable.
