Cabbage Pictures: Showing Physical Characteristics and Common Varieties
Cabbage, also called baocai, round cabbage or gaolicai, is a common vegetable in the Brassicaceae family, genus Brassica. Many people search for cabbage pictures mainly to confirm its appearance, or to tell it apart from similar vegetables such as Chinese cabbage and yellow bud cabbage. In pictures, the most obvious feature of cabbage is that its leaves wrap around one another layer by layer into a ball shape.
The leaf head of cabbage is mostly round or flat-round; the outer leaves are green or dark green, and once peeled open the inner leaves are lighter in color, commonly pale yellow-white. Besides ordinary green cabbage, there are also types such as purple cabbage with purple-red leaves and savoy cabbage with wrinkled leaves, which are fairly easy to distinguish in pictures.
Several vegetables that are easily confused with cabbage each have their own characteristics. The leaves of Chinese cabbage and yellow bud cabbage are looser and form a long cylinder shape, with broad white leaf stalks; cabbage, by contrast, has leaves packed tightly together into a ball, with a rounder overall outline. In most regions, baocai is simply another name for cabbage, and pictures of the two are basically identical.
When selecting cabbage, pictures can also be used for comparison: fresh cabbage has a firm leaf head and a glossy surface, with no signs of blackening or soft rot on the leaves. In addition, during cultivation, cabbage pictures can help identify the plant's form at different growth stages as well as common disease symptoms, offering some reference value for farmers' day-to-day management.
