What Kind of Snake Is the Banded Krait? An Introduction to Its Appearance, Habits and Venom Characteristics

The banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus) is a highly venomous snake in the genus Bungarus of the family Elapidae, named for the broad black and yellow bands that encircle its entire body. It is mainly distributed in the southern provinces of China as well as in Southeast Asia, and is often found in the humid zones of plains and hills, preferring to move about in shrubbery and along the edges of farmland near water sources.

In appearance, the black and yellow bands on the banded krait's body are arranged in a regular pattern, its cross-section is slightly triangular, and the tip of its tail is rather blunt. It is a nocturnal snake, hiding by day to rest in burrows or rock crevices and coming out at night to forage; its food includes fish, frogs, lizards and other snakes. Compared with many venomous snakes, the banded krait has a relatively gentle temperament, often hiding its head when disturbed, and cases of it actively attacking people are not common.
