Soft-shelled turtle hatchlings are the young that emerge after the eggs of the soft-shelled turtle (Chinese softshell turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis) hatch, and are also commonly called hatchling softshells or softshell seedlings among breeders. At this stage the turtle is small in size with a soft skirt, and is highly sensitive to environmental changes, making this the period in the entire rearing cycle that demands the most meticulous care. The quality of the seedlings directly affects the subsequent survival rate and the results of growing them out to market size.

When selecting soft-shelled turtle hatchlings, focus on observing their vitality and body surface condition. Healthy hatchlings usually respond quickly and crawl vigorously, with the abdomen and limbs intact and uninjured, the umbilical area well closed, and a relatively uniform size. Individuals with a pale body color, that float weakly, or that show obvious white spots or symptoms of skin rot should be avoided.

For rearing, the pond and the hatchlings should be disinfected before the hatchlings are stocked, and the water temperature should be kept warm and stable; a somewhat higher water temperature with little fluctuation is more favorable for their feeding and growth. At the first-feeding stage, live foods such as water fleas, bloodworms, or chopped small fish and shrimp can be fed, after which they can gradually be transitioned to artificial compound feed, feeding in small amounts many times.

In daily management, water quality is key: leftover feed and feces should be removed promptly, water should be changed at the appropriate times, and a basking platform should be set up in the pond for them to rest on. The stocking density should not be too high, and measures against escape and against natural enemies should also be taken. Sudden temperature differences can easily trigger illnesses such as colds, so nutrition should be strengthened before overwintering and insulation preparations should be made in advance.

Overall, the core of raising soft-shelled turtle hatchlings well lies in stable water temperature, clean water quality, suitable feed, and careful observation. As long as the foundation at the hatchling stage is laid well, the growth rate and health level of the turtles later on will be better assured, and the farming benefits will be easier to realize.
