The uses of Mimosa pudica are seen in its ornamental value, medicinal value and everyday care
Mimosa pudica (sensitive plant) is a perennial herb in the Fabaceae family, genus Mimosa. The plant is not tall, its stems bear fine thorns, and its pinnately compound leaves are extremely sensitive: at the slightest touch they close in pairs, then slowly open again a little later. This interesting stress response has made it an introductory species through which many people first get to know plants. It is native to tropical regions, and today it can also be seen in various places across southern China.
Ornamental value and science education are Mimosa pudica's most prominent uses. Its leaflets open and close in a lively way, folding up as if shy at a light touch, and whether placed on a balcony or a windowsill it brings plenty of enjoyment; it is also great material for explaining plant sensitivity phenomena to children. When it blooms, it also puts out small pink-purple fluffy ball flowers that look quite distinctive.
In traditional folk experience, the whole plant of Mimosa pudica can be used as medicine, and it is often considered to have uses such as clearing heat, calming the mind and draining dampness, mostly used as a decoction or applied externally. It should be noted that Mimosa pudica contains substances such as mimosine, which are somewhat irritating, so it is not advisable to pick and take it on your own; medicinal use must be carried out under professional guidance, and pregnant women and children should especially avoid taking it by mouth.
As for care, Mimosa pudica likes a warm, sunny and humid environment and is not cold-tolerant, so in winter pay attention to keeping it warm and protecting it from frost. Keep the potting soil slightly moist and the light sufficient in daily care, and it will grow with spreading leaves and branches. Because the plant has thorns and contains trace toxic components, when kept at home it is best placed on a well-ventilated balcony and not kept in the bedroom for long periods; wash your hands after touching it, and you can safely enjoy its fun.
