Weasel possession is a folk belief circulated in rural areas of northern China, referring to a person suddenly showing abnormal speech and behavior, loss of emotional control, clouded consciousness and other such signs, which are explained as the essence of a weasel having attached itself to the person. In traditional belief, the weasel is called Huang Daxian (Great Immortal Huang), and folk tradition holds that it is quite spiritual and can bewitch people's minds, so in the past, when such situations arose, people would often ask someone to burn incense to drive out evil and call back the soul to calm the spirit.

From a scientific point of view, so-called possession is mostly related to mental or psychological factors. When hysteria, epilepsy or mental illness flares up, patients may show symptoms such as unclear consciousness, disordered speech and strange behavior; long-term mental tension and strong psychological suggestion may also trigger similar stress reactions. In the past, rural medical conditions were limited, and people lacked understanding of such illnesses, so they habitually explained them as possession.

The reason this belief is tied to the weasel has some connection to its habits. The weasel is agile, releases a foul odor when in danger, and often moves at night and raids chicken coops, making its behavior seem quite mysterious. In addition, folk stories were passed by word of mouth and became more and more mysterious with each retelling, so the weasel was cloaked in an aura of spirituality, and the belief in possession spread from there.

In fact, the weasel has no spiritual power at all, let alone the ability to possess people. It feeds mainly on rodents and plays a clear role in controlling rodent damage in farmland and reducing grain losses. It is now a protected wild animal and may not be hunted at will. If someone in the home shows abnormal mental behavior, the correct approach is to seek medical attention as soon as possible to find the cause, rather than blindly driving out evil, so as not to delay treatment.
