Sophora flowers generally refer to the blossoms of the pagoda tree (Sophora japonica), with two common types: the Chinese scholar tree and the black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). As far as the plants themselves are concerned, the flowers of both contain no obvious toxicity and can be eaten or used in medicine. Folk dishes such as steamed sophora flowers, sophora flower pancakes and sophora flower steamed wheat rice are all made with sophora flowers, so there is no need to worry excessively that sophora flowers are poisonous, though there are indeed some points to keep in mind when eating them.

Different varieties have different uses. The Chinese scholar tree mostly blooms in summer, with yellowish-white flowers; the dried flower buds are called huaimi, which is often used in traditional Chinese medicine and is believed to cool the blood and stop bleeding, and it is generally not eaten fresh as a vegetable. The black locust blooms in spring, with pure white, delicately sweet-scented flowers and a better taste, and it is the main target for spring foraging.

What needs attention is the source and food safety. Sophora trees planted for landscaping along roadsides and in parks may have been sprayed with pesticides and also absorb exhaust fumes and dust, so picking them for food is not recommended. Before eating, they should be carefully washed and preferably blanched. In addition, some ornamental sophora varieties with red or purple flowers have unclear edibility and are not recommended for casual tasting, to avoid accidentally eating similar poisonous plants.

The value of sophora flowers goes beyond food. Huaimi is rich in rutin and is one of the important raw materials for extracting rutin. During the flowering period, sophora flowers are also a good nectar source, and sophora honey is sweet and delicious and quite popular. For daily consumption, sophora flowers are rather cooling in nature, so people with weak and cold spleen and stomach should not eat too much, and those with an allergic constitution are advised to try only a small amount the first time and stop eating promptly if any discomfort occurs.
